AIA ILLINOIS CITIZEN ARCHITECTS
LEGISLATORS ARE PEOPLE TOO. They have parents. They are parents, spouses, neighbors, friends, pet owners, and likely with jobs outside of the Capitol, of which you may find something in common. They share the same concerns that we all have for our communities, schools, hospitals and how infrastructure impacts their own homes. No need to be intimidated. They are here to help you just as much as we are here to help them.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE POLITICAL. Buildings and infrastructure are used by everybody. Political affiliations will never ever change that fact. Our role is to educate and advocate for safety and the integrity of the design-build professions.

WAYS TO BECOME MORE INVOLVED

THANK YOUR LEGISLATOR. A simple phone call or a hand written note to thank your State Senator or Senate Representative for supporting the Architecture Practice Act is a kind and professional gesture that will go a long way. The Illinois Architecture Practice Act, PA 101-0364, was passed unanimously at all levels, and for that, gratitude is a must.
MEET WITH YOUR LEGISLATORS at their district offices. With all of the vertical infrastructure funding through the Capital Plan, making you and your firm available as an industry expert resource for your legislator is instrumental in the overall process. Ask how you and your firm can help. Not just with the Capital Plan, but in making School Safety a priority, and also in Disaster, Recovery and Relief efforts.
Each year, AIA Illinois hosts PRAIRIE GRASSROOTS, where member architects meet with their legislators at the Illinois State Capitol, to discuss current issues, including school safety. This event is very successful and each year, legislators comment on how much they enjoy meeting with our members, committees permitting, on our lobby day.

CONTRIBUTE to AIA Illinois' PAC. Every opportunity to actively interact with legislators is vital to the success of design-build policies. The size of our PAC is a direct indication of our membership interest in protecting the integrity of professional licensure as well as building and construction safety.

PAC contributions are extremely important at the federal level too. Contributing to AIA National's ArchiPAC proves the interest of the importance of advocacy on behalf of architects not just in Illinois but on issues that impacts the industry in regional clusters or nation-wide. Let us show AIA National that Illinois cares and that we believe in our voice in Washington, DC!

Without your help, educating the public, our state legislators and our members of US Congress, about the importance of Architects and what Architects do, is an impossible task.
