CONGRATULATIONS to the 2007 AIA Illinois Honor Award Recipients
On Thursday, November 2 the 2007 AIA Illinois honor awards were handed out at the historic hotel in st. charles, illinois. The awards recognize the very best in architecture, planning and design as well as the outstanding service of individuals and groups. both categories of honories exemplify what it takes to build better communities.

For the VILLAGE OF HILLSIDE MUNICIPAL CENTER
JURY Comments
· It is far too rare in today’s political climate to witness the vision, collaboration, and sensitivity to a community’s historic past as was exemplified in the development of the Hillside Municipal Complex. This adaptive reuse project required detailed and creative efforts to meet the needs of the Village. The end result was an example of outstanding historic preservation and the complex is part of a true town center for the community.

For the ST. JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH
JURY Comments
· The restoration of St John’s Episcopal Church represents a wonderful example of creating opportunity from crisis. The recreation of the original structure and interiors was done in fashion that incorporated 21st century improvements such as geothermal heating and air conditioning seamlessly. Excellent efforts were made to assess the elements of the church and to reclaim aspects that had been lost through prior changes like the excellent acoustics and the church bells. The church through its restoration has taken a more vital role in the community.

FOr the THE ILLINOIS STATE CAPITOL: RENOVATION OF THE HOUSE & SENATE CHAMBERS
JURY Comments
· A commitment to a thorough and exhaustive research to identify all original design elements in great detail and color. Many obstacles were conquered to be true to the original design, and as such this renovation is a true honor to the people of Illinois.
· The design restored the original exquisite detail including the reconstruction of the lay light, resulting in a vibrant rejuvenated space.

For: SHEPHERD OF THE LAKES LUTHERAN CHURCH
JURY Comments
· The addition and expansion of this church while simple in plan required thoughtful massing and fenestration to retain and build upon the imagery of the existing church. It has a contemporary feel with no indication that it has ever been anything other than its current form. The openness is well executed.

For the CTA KEDZIE & ROCKWELL STATION RECONSTRUCTION
JURY Comments
· Challenging tight site for reconstruction and accessibility:
· A narrow building width of just 14 feet, the structure feels open, lightweight and well-connected to the surrounding site. The design graciously and uniquely solved accessibility by tilting the entire floor of the station.

JURY Comments
· As the Van der Rohe award recognizes innovation in concept or detail, the Tyner Interpretive Center deservingly reflects an architectural elegance and precision using wood, glass and metal to establish material richness and contextual simplicity. The physical expression of this Platinum LEED facility’s program directly educates the public about the prairie in a way that embodies Miesian design at its absolute best.

· The results of the design effort have been spectacular. The building has connected patrons with the building and the built environment. The building was beautifully situated to showcase and embrace adjacent prairie and wetlands with wonderful use of natural light and materials. The facility is bright, friendly, and functional.

For THE NATIONAL ITALIAN AMERICAN SPORTS HALL OF FAME
JURY Comments
· This handsome building establishes its urban credentials long before engaging the visitor with its internal play of geometric form and volume. The deliberate use of subdued colors in dramatic forms focuses the visitor’s eye onto a powerful composition of solid and void, screening and light, as the exhibitory and displays of this center relate the athletic contributions of the Italian-American community.

· The Levy Senior Center is an outstanding example of the revitalization of a community through thoughtful and elegant design. The transparency of the walls benefits occupants and passers by both during the day and at night with a sense of eyes on the street. The location of the building, so that it minimized impacts to James Park while optimizing accessibility, allows the Center to be an integral part of its neighborhoods.

· The rehabilitation allows a great structure to return to its full glory and public use as the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum Visitor Center and it creates a great new front yard for Springfield.

· To paraphrase from the mission statement of the healthy schools campaign - meaningful and sustainable change occurs when informed, engaged and empowered stakeholders work in collaboration. These Partnerships and coalitions are an important way in which we will all function in our state advocacy and AIA Illinois is pleased to consider the HSC to be among its friends and allies - they get what livable communities are really about.

JURY Comments
· Mark not only embodies the talents and skills of a well-rounded architect and the principles of a true Citizen Architect, he is a leader amongst his peers and within his firm. Mark is contributing to his state-wide community in a unique and very meaningful way through his involvement as the youngest member appointed by the Governor to serve on the Capital Development Board. Mark embraces the responsibilities architects have for their community and craft and is dedicated to furthering the profession of architecture.

- While Robert Selby FAIA’s work is extensive as an educator and well recognized, it is his consistent effort to engage his students in real projects that benefit all involved that makes him so worthy of the Nathan Clifford Ricker Award. He has developed studios for communities in need giving the students not only valuable design skills but an understanding of the importance of pro bono projects. He has furthered these efforts by being a leader in AIA on the local, state and national levels and championing the role of architects in creating livable communities.

· Martha Bell, has made service to her community a hallmark of her career. Her passion for community service has been clearly shown, however, in her dedicated efforts to improve the public realm of her community. She has distinguished herself in numerous other pro bono architecture projects and educational and social endeavors and has truly demonstrated a spirit of caring and love for her community.

· Enrique Unanue’s career shows the absolute value that architectural skill and dedication can bring to a specialized area of public interest like health care. He has advanced the art and science of health-related architecture through his unique experience and shared his wisdom through numerous publications and presentations to professional forums. Fortunately, he has taken the same dedication to excellence into broad arenas of volunteerism and community support, allowing citizens to benefit from the knowledge and capacity of this outstanding public servant and architect.

· Louis Garapolo epitomizes the spirit of the citizen-architect and professional practitioner. His career has been built upon distinguished architecture and personal contributions of time and expertise to the community across a range of interests. While making these valuable donations of time, he has continued to hone his professional insights, making them available to colleagues through publications, speaking engagements, and his own outstanding designs.
